Notarial Acts
South Dakota notaries are authorized to perform specific notarial acts, which include acknowledgments, jurats, and signature witnessing. Below is a general overview of each:
-
A process where a Notary Public verifies the identity of the signer, watches them sign a document, and the signer then declares they did so of their own free will to the Notary.
-
A Notary oversees the signing of a document and administers an oath or affirmation to the signer.
Oath: An oath is a solemn spoken promise made to a Supreme Being.
Affirmation: An affirmation is a solemn spoken promise made on personal honor, without mentioning a Supreme Being.
-
A Notary verifies an individual’s identity and physically witnesses them sign a document.
-
South Dakota Notary Publics cannot certify copies of documents, but they can have an individual certify the validity of a copy of a document and notarize that person’s signature.

Where to Meet
Ensuring the safety and security of all parties involved is a top priority. Therefore, all appointments are to be scheduled and conducted in public locations during regular business hours. This measure helps to create a safe and comfortable environment for everyone.
Choosing an Appointment Location
We recommend choosing a meeting location that offers seating and table space, that is already part of your daily routine, such as your workplace (if permitted) or a coffee shop you visit regularly. Given the sensitive nature of some documents, a setting that provides a bit of privacy is also advisable.
If you're unsure where to meet, let us decide for you. Select the “Choose Location for Me” option when booking, and we'll email you a list of recommended spots for your appointment.
